Renowned musician Bryan Ferry has announced a new collaborative album, Loose Talk, created with performance artist, writer, and painter Amelia Barratt. Scheduled for release on March 28, 2025, under Ferry’s own label, Dene Jesmond, this project marks a significant departure from his previous works, blending music, poetry, and art in innovative ways.

A New Creative Chapter

Loose Talk represents a bold exploration for Ferry, blurring the lines between various artistic disciplines. Fifty-three years after Roxy Music’s groundbreaking debut, Ferry continues to push boundaries. This album is unlike any of his previous works, yet it resonates with the essence of his extensive career.

This project also marks the first time Ferry has composed new music for texts written by another artist. The album features eleven texts by Barratt, each offering micro-fictions that are both fragmentary and self-contained. The collaboration balances refined minimalism and abstraction with experimental energy, creating a unique language where two monologues evolve into a duet.

The Collaborative Journey

Ferry and Barratt’s partnership began serendipitously at an exhibition opening, where Ferry learned of Barratt’s ventures into writing and performance alongside her painting. Both artists share an art school background—Ferry studied painting at Newcastle University in the 1960s, while Barratt attended Glasgow School of Art and later earned an MFA from the Slade School of Art in 2016. Their differing experiences have converged to animate Loose Talk, creating unexplored artistic territory.

Their initial collaboration was the 2024 single “Star,” featured in Ferry’s compilation Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023. This track received critical acclaim, with Uncut Magazine describing it as having “smouldering brilliance,” and MOJO referring to it as “a sinister sequel to ‘Dance Away’.”

Lead Single: “Orchestra”

As a preview of the forthcoming album, Ferry and Barratt have released the lead single, “Orchestra,” accompanied by a music video directed and shot by Ferry himself. The track is richly detailed and transportive, offering listeners a glimpse into the experimental and youthful energy that characterizes the album.

Artistic Statements

Reflecting on the collaboration, Ferry expressed that the experience has opened a new chapter in his work, aiming to create something neither artist could achieve alone. He noted that while the album sounds different from his previous works, it aligns with his artistic goal of creating new and unique worlds.

Barratt described Loose Talk as a cinematic conversation between two artists, combining music and spoken texts. She emphasized the freedom and experimental possibilities within the collaboration, highlighting the dynamic exchange that propelled the project forward.

Anticipation and Reception

The announcement of Loose Talk has generated excitement among fans and critics alike. Ferry’s ability to continually reinvent his artistry while maintaining the core elements of his style has been widely acknowledged. The collaboration with Barratt introduces fresh perspectives, promising an album that challenges traditional boundaries and offers a novel listening experience.

As the release date approaches, the music community eagerly anticipates how Loose Talk will further solidify Ferry’s legacy as an innovator and how Barratt’s contributions will enhance the project’s depth and originality. The lead single “Orchestra” has already set high expectations, showcasing the duo’s synergy and the album’s experimental essence.
